Value & Characteristics

Before selling your diamond jewelry, you must know how your item is priced. Normally, jewelry experts follow a system for determining a diamond’s value. Obviously, rarity is one factor that plays into a diamond’s value. Other than that, diamond graders usually consider the diamond’s carat, clarity, color, and cut or what we call the 4 Cs when grading diamonds. The 4 Cs is a diamond grading system that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) developed in 1953.

Carat

Diamond experts refer to carat as the unit of measurement used to measure diamonds and other gemstones. More specifically, 1ct is equal to 200 milligrams or 0.00643 troy ounces. For a more precise measurement, each carat is divided into 100 points, where one point is one-hundredth of a carat. The price per carat, however, does not linearly increase with size.

Clarity

Clarity describes the measurement of internal defects found in a diamond. These defects are referred to as inclusions. Inclusions can be foreign materials or structural imperfections such as small cracks that affect a diamond’s overall appearance. These inclusions look whitish or cloudy. The size, color, number, location, visibility, and orientation of the inclusions affect the diamond’s overall clarity.

Color

The finest quality diamond is colorless, and it gets a D grade. Diamonds with slight traces of color receive a grade E or F color diamonds. Slightly colored diamonds are gets I, J, or K grade color diamonds. Diamond graders use magnification to identify colors. Diamond graders consider some colored diamonds rare.

Cut

The diamond-cut pertains to the technique by which the diamond is cut, shaped, and polished from its rough form. It also refers to the craftsmanship and the angle at which the diamond is cut.

Diamond Jewelry History

Diamonds in jewelry-making dates back to India over 3,000 years ago. In the 4th century BCE, Buddhist scriptures referred to diamonds as objects that could ward off evil because of their ability to refract light. As a result, ancient Buddhists wore diamonds as talismans because of those beliefs.

One of the first documented uses of diamonds in jewelry was in 1074 CE, in the form of Hungary’s Queen, Anastasia of Kiev. After that, diamonds became a staple in crowns and royal jewels. Then, in 1477, Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a diamond engagement ring, the first one in history. As a result, the tradition of giving diamond engagement rings to one’s betrothed started.
